Ban the Consumption of Nuts in Enclosed UK Public Spaces to Protect People with Severe All

The Issue

My daughter suffers from a severe nut allergy. Her reaction isn’t mild — it’s life-threatening. Anaphylaxis is a terrifying, sudden condition, and even airborne exposure can trigger it. Imagine sitting on a plane, in a cinema, or in a pub, where the very air can become a threat. It feels like living in constant fear.

Many parents may not even be aware their child has a severe nut allergy until a reaction happens. This makes the risk in enclosed public spaces even more unpredictable and dangerous.

Now that my daughter is getting older — she's 11 — she’s beginning to explore the world more independently. She wants to enjoy trips to the theatre or cinema with friends, like any other child her age. But she may not yet be as vigilant as an adult. As a parent, it’s terrifying to know that something as simple as someone opening a packet of peanuts nearby could put her in serious danger — and I might not be there to protect her.

Peanuts and tree nuts are among the most common and dangerous triggers for those with severe allergies. In enclosed spaces with limited airflow — such as planes, trains, restaurants, and cinemas — the risk of exposure is significantly heightened. For allergy sufferers, these environments can become unsafe, where a snack eaten by one person could cause a life-threatening reaction in another.

Emergency incidents caused by nut exposure have occurred on flights, in schools, cinemas, and other public venues. Yet there are still no consistent regulations in the UK restricting nut consumption in these settings.

We are not asking for a ban on nut sales in shops or supermarkets. This petition calls for a ban on the consumption of nuts in enclosed public spaces where the risks are highest — not private homes or open outdoor areas.

This is not a drastic request — it’s a call for sensible protection. Nut-free alternatives are widely available. By banning the consumption of peanut and tree nut products in enclosed public spaces, we can dramatically reduce the risk of accidental exposure and help ensure that everyone — especially children with severe allergies — can safely enjoy public life.

This is about safety, dignity, and inclusion. Let’s make public spaces truly public — where everyone, regardless of medical condition, can feel safe.

Please sign this petition to urge UK lawmakers and public health authorities to implement a ban on the consumption of nuts in enclosed public spaces. Together, we can create a safer future for everyone living with life-threatening allergies.
