This petition stems from a deep sense of injustice, a wound that still echoes in the hearts of those who respect human dignity and the sanctity of children's rights. Steven van de Velde, an athlete who had the audacity to not only violate an innocent soul but was also sentenced to four years in prison after admitting to three counts of rape against a child he met on Facebook in March 2016.

Despite his serious crimes, he still qualified for the Paris Olympics, which is deeply troubling and a mockery of the Olympic values that emphasize mutual respect and dignity. Van de Velde’s continued participation sets a dangerous precedent, suggesting that fame and physical prowess can eclipse the most heinous of wrongdoings, thus contributing to the culture of impunity in sexual assault cases.

Allowing convicts like Van de Velde to participate in events celebrated globally could inadvertently downplay the seriousness of their crimes, causing additional emotional damage to victims and their families.

We call on the International Olympic Committee to take an assertive stance to prioritize the dignity and safety of children over the reputation of a convicted rapist. We demand a lifetime ban on Steven van de Velde from participating in the Olympics or any other sporting events.
