The Issue

In today’s rapidly evolving digital age, children are being exposed to the vast universe of social media platforms quicker than ever before. While these platforms offer avenues for creativity and learning, they also pose significant risks, particularly for children under the age of 16. We are petitioning to ban the use of social media for children below this age threshold for myriad compelling reasons.

First and foremost, mental health concerns are at the forefront of this issue. Numerous studies have highlighted the adverse effects of social media on young minds. According to research published in the journal "Pediatrics," increased screen time on social media is linked to heightened risks of anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem in adolescents. Young people are constantly bombarded with idealized images and social comparisons, which can lead to unhealthy self-perceptions and eating disorders.

Moreover, the risk of cyberbullying escalates when young, impressionable users navigate these platforms. The Cyberbullying Research Center notes that around 34% of teens report having experienced cyberbullying in their lifetime. These experiences can have devastating consequences, from academic struggles to severe emotional distress and, in extreme cases, can lead to tragic outcomes such as self-harm or suicide.

In addition, there are serious concerns regarding data privacy and online safety for children. Predators and strangers often exploit these platforms to target unsuspecting young users, posing threats not only to their digital safety but also their physical safety.

Beyond this we also urge the government to put some rules for using kids on social media by parents. While it’s ok to have kids in parents videos, misusing their emotions or putting them in dangerous situations or vulnerable situations should be restricted for physical and emotional safety and growth of the child. We have seen young kids over performing on social media for views and likes beyond their years. A father recently made his child jump from a one storey building,  how are we justifying this?

We urge policymakers and stakeholders in education and child welfare to enact strict regulations prohibiting social media accounts for children under 16. By enforcing this age restriction, we can protect the well-being and development of our youth, ensuring they have a safer environment to grow and thrive in a world where online and offline realities are increasingly intertwined.

Please join us in this crucial initiative to protect our youth. Sign this petition to call for action that prioritizes the safety, mental health, and overall welfare of children, securing their future in an ever-connected world.
