Petitioning NZ Government The House of Representatives

Ban single-use straws in restaurant and cafe outlets in NZ

I am petitioning The House of Representatives of the New Zealand government. It is important to show the government that New Zealanders find this to be a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. Nick Smith, current national Minister of the Environment has not listened to the revolt against plastic straws, so it is time to take a different approach.

It is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. It seems that more times than not, when we purchase a cold beverage we are offered a plastic straw. Plastic straws do not have the ability to biodegrade. The process of making plastic straws starts with oil drilling, manufacturing, shipping and distribution, all which are polluting "clean green NZ" as well as many plastic straws finding their way to the ocean after use and killing our marine life.

While we have taken massive steps against single-use plastic to try and aid our environment, banning micro-beads and putting pressure on the use of plastic bags - there is more to be done. Next time you order your cold beverage, I urge you to ask for it without a straw. Lets make New Zealand a cleaner place. Sign the petition to show just how serious we are about this issue.

This petition will be delivered to:
