Ban Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles
The Issue
Plasticlast is a project started with the goal to ban single-use plastic water bottles.
When it comes to landfills, plastic waste is only second to food waste, which takes up to 25 years to decompose on its own. Plastic however, takes 20-1,000 years; single-use water bottles specifically reach around 450 years to decompose.
What does that mean? Here is a list of all the ways this damages our environment.
- Entanglement and Starvation of Marine Animals
- Toxic Chemical Leaching
- Hormone Disruption
- Impaired Fertility
- Obesity and Diabetes
- Fetal Development
- Carcinogens (Cancer-causing)
- Oxidative Inflammation
- Antimony Exposure
- heart, liver, and kidney issues
- Food chain disruption
- Hormone Disruption
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Global Warming)
- Incineration Chemicals (Air and Soil Pollution)
- Spread of Invasive Species
- Landfill Overflow
If these single-use bottles are so harmful, why do we have them? The convenience. They are portable, easily accessible, cheaper than a reusable water bottle, can be given out in situations of emergency or extreme conditions, as well as offering a sterile, hygienic solution to locally polluted water. Why are we listing all of these benefits? Because each and every one of these benefits also applies to Boxed Water, which is 74% paper that can decompose in less than a year. The minimal plastic and aluminum contents are 100% recycled, meaning they were not created for the product, but rather old products being repurposed.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for legislation for a ban on single-use plastic water bottles.
Single-use plastic water bottles have no excuse.
