Ban Sale of Live Fish in Supermarkets

Ban Sale of Live Fish in Supermarkets
The Issue
My best friend works on the grocery side of Meijer, and there is rarely anyone taking care of the fish. Despite her bringing it up to multiple people, actions are rarely taken, and if something is done, it only lasts for a week at best. After that, the tanks go back to being dirty, filled with sick or even dead fish. These fish don't deserve to live like this. Grocery stores are no place to sell a live animal, whether as a pet or food (don't even get me started on lobsters, ugh!).
Fish are much more complex creatures than people realize. They are not meant to be kept in a small bowl. They require a vast amount of space, a proper filtration system, and a covered aquarium to thrive. Fish have feelings and personalities, and it's time we start treating them with the respect they deserve.
The sale of live pet fish in grocery stores like Meijer and other supermarkets must stop. These places lack the necessary expertise and facilities to properly care for these animals. It is inhumane and unethical to keep them in such deplorable conditions only for them to be sold to consumers who are often uninformed about their needs.
Statistics show aquatic animals can experience pain, fear, and suffering similar to other pets we cherish at home. According to a study by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), fish kept in inadequate conditions can suffer from malnutrition, stress, and disease, often leading to premature death. Despite being sold as "starter pets," fish need much more than a bowl and a few flakes of food.
To enact change, supermarkets need to acknowledge the complexity of caring for fish and cease selling them as if they are mere commodities. If they can't ensure the welfare of these creatures, they shouldn't sell them at all. Instead, supermarkets should collaborate with local fish specialists and independent pet stores that have the proper knowledge and dedication to caring for aquatic life.
Please join me in urging grocery chains to reconsider their stance on selling live pet fish. Sign this petition to help stop this cruelty and ensure a better life for these sensitive and unique animals.
