The Issue
I was in New York City on that fateful day, experiencing the terror and chaos all around me, feeling the collective trauma that gripped our city. September 11th is a day of solemn remembrance for those who sacrificed everything during these horrific attacks on our country. Yet, each year, as we honor the bravery of the NYPD, the FDNY, and countless others who risked, and sometimes gave, their lives to help, there stands a man whose continued presence at these observances tarnishes their memory: Rudy Giuliani.
Over the years, Giuliani has openly supported actions and rhetoric that undermine the values of unity and resilience foundational to New York's spirit. His association with those who attempted to destabilize our nation again on January 6, 2021, raises serious doubts about his allegiance to America’s democratic principles. Furthermore, Giuliani's public record of making racist remarks and airing divisive views does not align with the inclusive community that New Yorkers strive to maintain.
Of even greater concern is his behavior towards individuals he believed to be underage, which reflects a moral and ethical deficiency unworthy of anyone associated with the honorable ceremonies of September 11th. How can we place someone next to the families of those who perished, individuals who hold these memories as cherished yet tragic parts of their lives, when his actions suggest a concerning moral compass?
Allowing Giuliani to participate in official 9/11 observances is a disservice to those we pledge to honor. It diminishes the sanctity of the day and offends the very people who deserve to be in the spotlight. We must shield 9/11 from those whose actions contradict its essence.
