The issue

Every year in New Zealand, hundreds of bulls, horses, and calves are forced into terrifying situations, suffering severe psychological distress and physical injuries — sometimes even death — all for public entertainment. These practices, including calf-roping and the use of flank straps, starkly conflict with New Zealand’s cherished values of kindness and animal protection. These animals have no voice, so it is up to us to stand up for them and demand change.

Rodeos have been a controversial form of entertainment for many years. The exposure of animals to high levels of stress is an integral part of these events, resulting in a setting where fear and pain are central to these spectacles. A growing number of New Zealanders have expressed their concern for the welfare of animals subjected to such practices. This awareness is fueled by evidence from animal welfare organizations and researchers who have documented the cruelty involved in rodeo activities.

New Zealand has always prided itself on being at the forefront of animal protection. With progressive animal welfare laws already in place, we now have the opportunity to take a stand and show that there is no place for rodeos in our society. It's crucial to bridge the gap between our national values and the reality of what's happening in rodeos.

We urgently call on the New Zealand Government to amend the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and enforce a ban on rodeos nationwide. By doing so, we can ensure that New Zealand remains a leader in animal welfare, reflecting our true values as a compassionate nation.

Please join me in urging the government to recognize rodeos as an unacceptable form of entertainment and put an end to this cruel practice. Sign this petition today to help protect the animals and make a significant change for a kinder New Zealand. Together, we can be the voice for these animals and stand up for what is right.
