My personal experience has always suggested that parks and recreation centers should serve as safe spaces for children. In contrast to this belief, I recently discovered that a registered sex offender, convicted of a horrendous child sex crime, will begin frequenting the recreation park this season and future seasons. Astonishingly, Texas law protects this offender's right to be there since he is no longer on probation or parole. This situation is not an outlier. Each day, sex offenders across our nation legally enter spaces where our children gather. An estimated 747,408 registered sex offenders reside in the United States (as reported by the National Center for Victims of Crime). Our communities must become safer for our children - the laws need to reflect this. I am petitioning for a local ban on allowing any registered sex offenders, regardless of their registration requirements, from local parks, recreations, and any other areas where children gather.
