The Issue

Our beloved UK beaches, once pristine and vibrant, are now increasingly littered with colourful fragments of broken plastic beach toys. These remnants are not just an eyesore; they pose a lethal threat to our cherished marine life and seabird populations. It used to be that a sturdy bucket and spade would accompany us from childhood through the years, ready in the shed for the next beach day. Now, we are lucky if they last half a day before breaking into potentially harmful microplastics.

The poor quality and design of these toys, hoop frisbees, monofilament crabbing lines, and clear buckets, particularly those sold in sets in mesh bags are a threat to marine and avian life. The mesh bags not only become waste themselves but are also notorious for entangling sea creatures and birds. Frisbees, meanwhile, pose a risk by getting caught around the necks of seals, while crabbing lines can ensnare and injure wildlife. This single-use, fragile plastic situation results in untold damage to ecosystems both on the land and underwater.

Statistics show that plastics are a significant component of marine debris, with harmful effects reaching beyond our shores. According to a study published by Ocean Conservancy, over 13 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans annually. In the UK alone, thousands of marine animals die every year due to plastic ingestion or entanglement, a crisis propelled in part by these disposable toys.

Our goal is clear: we must halt the import, manufacture, and sale of these poor-quality plastic beach toys in the UK. We urge manufacturers to prioritize durability and safety, opting for existing sustainable materials and eliminating single-use packaging such as mesh bags. They must recognize their role in protecting our environment and the creatures that rely on it.

This petition is directed towards the British Retail Consortium and key toy manufacturers and suppliers. We call on them to lead by example, making a concerted effort to replace these hazardous products with eco-friendly alternatives that children can enjoy safely, without compromising our environmental integrity.

I invite my fellow beach-goers, environmentalists, and all those who care about the health of our planet to support this cause. Sign the petition to demand action for safer, sustainable beach toys and help protect our precious marine life and the beauty of our UK's treasured coastlines. Together, our voices can make a difference. Please sign and share this petition.
