The Issue

Living in the United States, a country that champions freedom and fairness, I am personally struck by the current debate around phone usage in classrooms, particularly in Michigan. Schools have begun restricting students from using their phones in class, requiring them to leave their phones in lockers. However, it feels inequitable that teachers are not held to the same standard. Many educators misappropriate teaching time, using their phones for personal activities like scrolling on TikTok or engaging in inappropriate exchanges with significant others. With phones being a common distraction in classrooms, the policy should be applied to both students and teachers.

According to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey, 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and many educators believe these devices are more distracting than beneficial in the classroom. While schools have enforced strict rules banning student phone usage, teachers have been overlooked. Yet, they equally misuse this privilege during class hours, which undermines the educational experience.

A fair solution exists. If the goal is to create an environment conducive to learning, both students and teachers should be held accountable under the same guidelines. Teachers are role models and should exemplify the rules they expect students to follow. By prohibiting all personal mobile devices during class—leaving instruction-related devices provided by the school exempt—we ensure a balanced, less disruptive learning atmosphere.

It's crucial for educational institutions to implement a balanced policy. This not only promotes fairness but also enhances focus and quality of education, ensuring both students and educators are fully engaged in the learning process.

By signing this petition, we call upon educational policymakers and the Department of Education in Michigan to enforce a no-phone rule for both students and teachers during classroom hours. Let’s work together to foster an equitable and distraction-free educational environment for all. Please sign this petition to support a balanced phone ban in Michigan schools.
