The Issue

Petition to Restrict Oversized Mobile Home Transport on I-65 During Rush Hour in Birmingham, Alabama

To:

Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), Birmingham City Council, and State Legislators

We, the undersigned, call for the immediate regulation of oversized mobile home transport on Interstate 65 during weekday rush hours—specifically between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM CST—in the Birmingham metropolitan area, with special attention to the high-risk zone known as Malfunction Junction, where I-65 intersects with I-20/59.

Why This Matters:
For decades, residents and commuters have endured dangerous and unnecessary traffic snarls caused by the routine transport of double and triple-wide mobile homes during peak morning traffic. These oversized loads often occupy 2–3 lanes of traffic, reducing a multi-lane interstate to a crawl and creating extreme collision risks as high-speed traffic suddenly encounters slow-moving, lane-straddling vehicles.

This is not just an inconvenience—it is a public safety hazard. Thousands of drivers, including parents transporting children to school, are put at risk daily. The frequency of near-misses and actual accidents in this corridor is alarming and unacceptable.

Our Demands:
Restrict Oversized Load Permits
Prohibit oversized mobile home transport on I-65 within 10 miles of Birmingham between 7:00–9:00 AM CST on weekdays.
Enforce Time-of-Day Regulations
Update ALDOT permit guidelines to include rush hour restrictions for high-density urban corridors.
Increase Oversight and Penalties
Implement fines and permit revocations for companies that violate these time-based restrictions.
Protect Commuters and Families
Prioritize safety over convenience for transport companies. Lives are at stake.

Personal Testimony:
As a daily commuter and parent, I have witnessed countless near-death experiences and have personally been involved in accidents caused by these oversized transports. The danger is real, and the solution is simple: restrict their movement during peak traffic hours.

Sign this petition if you believe in safer roads, smarter regulations, and protecting Alabama families from preventable harm.
