Ban over-the-counter sale of fireworks
The Issue
My heart breaks every year as Bonfire Night approaches. Each eruption of sound is more than a crack in the night for my beloved dog — it’s a burst of intense, uncontrollable fear. I recently witnessed my dog have a severe anxiety attack due to the random blasts of fireworks nearby, leaving her trembling and terrified for hours. Unfortunately, similar tragic stories of panic and despair echo across communities, with some animals even losing their lives simply because of a night of so-called celebration, even more so the absolute mindless people releasing fireworks at any time of day on any day of the year morning or. Ight.
The impact of fireworks extends beyond just our pets. In the United Kingdom, countless domestic animals, wildlife, and people, particularly those with PTSD, suffer greatly due to the unregulated use of fireworks. According to reports from the RSPCA, over 40% of dogs experience aversion to fireworks, and many pet owners are forced to medicate their pets to calm them down. Furthermore, the British Veterinary Association has highlighted the serious stress and injuries wildlife suffers as a direct consequence of fireworks, with small mammals and birds particularly at risk.
Additionally, we must consider the human impact. Veterans and others suffering from PTSD may relive traumatic experiences, leading to mental health deteriorations. Emergency services are also remarkably strained each year dealing with firework-related accidents.
Concrete measures have been taken in other countries where over-the-counter sales of fireworks are banned or restricted, significantly reducing cases of related distress and harm. It’s time the UK follows suit in prioritizing the well-being of its citizens and animals.
By restricting over-the-counter sales, we can control the accessibility and use of fireworks, reserving them for organized, licensed displays regulated to ensure safety and community standards. This approach is not about removing joy but about protecting life and maintaining peace in our neighborhoods.
I urge the UK government to ban the over-the-counter sales of fireworks. This petition calls for a change that values the safety and peace of every living being. Please join me in advocating for a safer environment for our pets, wildlife, and vulnerable community members by signing this petition.
