Ban on-street charity fundraisers approaching pedestrians

Ban on-street charity fundraisers approaching pedestrians
The Issue
I have been harassed multiple times by these so-called "fundraisers" on the streets of the UK. Once, when I was younger and financially incapable of making such commitments, I was tricked into signing up to a charity. These street fundraisers, colloquially known as "chuggers," often create an uncomfortable atmosphere, making pedestrians feel accosted and pressured.
While charity and fundraising are noble causes, the aggressive tactics employed by these fundraisers are not. Many individuals, like myself, have faced undue pressure and even deception, leading to financial and emotional stress. The streets should be a place where people can move freely and securely, without the fear of being harassed or coerced.
A recent survey by the Charities Aid Foundation revealed that nearly half of the British public find these fundraising tactics bothersome, with 40% reporting feeling harassed by street fundraisers. In the current economic climate, where individuals are already facing financial hardships, this additional pressure is both unfair and unnecessary.
Some cities, such as Manchester and Bath, have taken steps to regulate street fundraising, implementing stricter guidelines and designated areas for fundraisers. These measures have proven effective in reducing the number of complaints and creating a more pleasant urban experience for all citizens.
We are calling on the UK government to take action by banning on-street charity fundraisers from approaching pedestrians without prior consent. This would not impede the charities' ability to raise funds, as there are numerous other methods available, such as online fundraising, direct mail, and organized events, which do not infringe on an individual's right to walk unperturbed.
Join us in making our public spaces more welcoming and harassment-free by signing this petition. Help us urge the government to protect pedestrians and ensure that fundraising methods remain respectful and considerate of all individuals. Sign now to support a ban on on-street charity fundraisers approaching pedestrians.
