The issue

As a student, each day I am confronted with the reality that a piece of software, Linewize, regulates the way I interact with technology at school. This system, installed on our devices, promises protection, but in reality, it creates barriers to learning and personal growth. I am not alone in feeling this way—many of my peers share a similar experience. Every time we open our laptops, we find ourselves oppressed by restrictions that make research and collaboration unduly difficult.

Linewize is meant to protect us, but instead it ruins our school experience by constantly filtering out legitimate educational content under the guise of safeguarding. This control impedes our ability to explore topics deeply, research autonomously, and develop the critical thinking skills we need to succeed in the modern world. According to a study by the American Library Association, unrestricted internet access is crucial for academic success, yet Linewize directly contradicts this by censoring access to valuable resources.

Moreover, Linewize is an invasion of personal privacy. It monitors our online activities in a manner that feels intrusive and overbearing. The Electronic Frontier Foundation emphasizes the importance of privacy for students to feel safe and free to express themselves. Under the constant surveillance of Linewize, it's nearly impossible to use school-issued devices without the fear of being scrutinized for every click.

We need to consider alternative solutions that provide real protection without sacrificing user freedom and privacy. Schools should explore more open systems that are inclusive, promote digital literacy, and teach students responsible internet usage without imposing harsh restrictions. Simple guidelines and education can often be more effective than stringent surveillance software.

I urge school administrators and educational policymakers to reassess the use of Linewize. It’s time to ban this software from our school devices and implement solutions that respect our right to privacy while encouraging an open environment for learning. Please sign this petition to support a free and secure educational experience for all students.
