Ban Lightspeed Filter Agent in Fayetteville Schools

The Issue

The Lightspeed Filter Agent, currently utilized in Fayetteville Schools, has become a source of frustration and concern for students, parents, and educators alike. This web filtering software, while intended to protect students from harmful online content, has overly restricted access to valuable educational resources, hindering both teaching and learning processes. Many students find themselves unable to complete assignments and conduct necessary research because legitimate websites are unjustly blocked.

Numerous reports from students and teachers highlight that educational tools such as Khan Academy, National Geographic, and even some sections of Google Workspace are being inadvertently flagged and barred. This not only stifles the creativity and curiosity of our students but also hampers teachers’ ability to provide a comprehensive and modern education. Moreover, the administrative burden on our school IT staff to manually unblock these essential educational websites is both time-consuming and unsustainable.

Not only that, but what it does behind the screen is worse. If you are operating your school Chromebook right now, light speed filter agent is watching your every move, including through your camera.

While we acknowledge the importance of ensuring students’ safe online experiences, the current configuration of Lightspeed Filter Agent is counterproductive to educational advancement. There exists a need for a more balanced approach that protects our children without compromising their educational opportunities. Other school districts successfully employ less restrictive, yet effective solutions, proving that it is possible to maintain safety standards while promoting quality education.

We call on the school board to take immediate action in reviewing and ultimately banning the use of Lightspeed Filter Agent in Fayetteville Schools. By opting for a more flexible and educational-friendly web filter, Fayetteville Schools can enhance student engagement and maximize educational resources while continuing to provide a secure online environment.

Join us in urging the Fayetteville School Board to make this significant change. Sign this petition to stand for better educational resources and a brighter future for our students.
