The Issue

I am a mother who has witnessed the devastating effects of kratom firsthand. What started as a 'natural' product from a vape shop became an addictive, dangerous substance that nearly destroyed my son’s life. Kratom is unregulated, highly addictive, and is being sold freely to adults as if it’s safe. It is not. It causes severe withdrawal, psychological breakdowns, and even death.

Kratom, a substance often touted as a 'natural' remedy, has proven to be anything but. Despite being marketed as a harmless herbal product, kratom carries significant risks, especially to those under 21 who are most vulnerable. There have been numerous reports of health issues, including major detox symptoms, financial ruin from dependency, and tragic, avoidable deaths. In Atlanta, Georgia, we cannot sit idle while lives are destroyed.

Statistics from the CDC show an alarming increase in kratom-related calls to poison control centers, highlighting the urgent need for regulation. A 2018 FDA report confirmed multiple deaths associated with kratom, underscoring the gravity of this issue. Delaying action exacerbates the problem, allowing more individuals, especially young adults, to fall prey to its harmful effects.

While kratom can affect all age groups, banning its sale to those under 21 will reduce the risk, but needs to be banned completely providing an extra layer of protection to the most impressionable demographic. Lawmakers in Georgia must act to impose this age restriction, thereby curtailing easy access to a substance that can wreak havoc on individuals and families alike.

We call upon Georgia’s legislators to prioritize the health and safety of their citizens by banning the sale of kratom to individuals under the age of 21 immediately. Protecting the youth from these dangers should be an action, not just a discussion.

Sign this petition to urge the lawmakers in Georgia to take swift action and protect our community from the dangers of kratom.
