Yesterday, Sunday 31st May, a group of us attended the Ballarat jumps races in freezing and wet conditions. While we had the freedom to rug up or sit in the car, the horses had to run in appalling conditions - at one point the rain was hitting them full in the face as they negotiated the jumps.
One horse was dropped out of the steeplechase - Dhaafer sustained a tendon injury. According to Steward's reports he has been "retired". This usually means a death sentence.
The steeplechase and jumps race saw exhausted horses struggling to finish. One horse was gasping for air at the last jump - a most distressing sight.
There were very few people at the races - approximately 300. Jumps racing is not popular which is evident in the desperate attempt to attract families by creating a "Snow Day" at the races. The "snow" turned to sludge and families left early in disgust.
Thank you to the 4,233 of you who have signed this petition. Please continue to share it widely and let's get jumps racing banned!
