Ban Jumps Racing
This petition had 5,992 supporters
Jumps racing is outdated and cruel, dangerous to both horse and rider. Horses are forced to jump metre high fences, at speed, in a group, over lengthy distances all of which creates fatigue resulting in horrible injuries and/or the death of many horses each year. Between 2008 – 2014, 57 horses were killed on track with unknown numbers killed off track or sent to the knackery.
SA Racing minister, Leon Bignell says the sport is a relic of the past and he wants to see an exit strategy. “I would like to see jumps racing phased out and I think most of the public would,” he told The Advertiser (18 Feb 2015).
The Animal Justice Party calls on the South Australian Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Conservation, Ian Hunter to amend the Animal Welfare Act, South Australia, 1985 and the Victorian Minister of Agriculture, Victoria to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1986 to reflect a ban on Jumps Racing in their respective states.
