Ban homework in schools for better mental health
The Issue
My child, like countless others, is severely struggling under the constant pressure of schoolwork. Every day, they spend six exhausting hours at school, only to return home and face an onslaught of homework. There's no time for play, no opportunity to unwind or explore personal interests outside of academics. My child deserves to be a kid, to laugh and have fun without the looming shadow of school assignments hanging over their head.
Homework is meant to reinforce what students learn in class, but studies show that excessive homework can actually harm student well-being. According to the American Psychological Association, heavy homework loads are directly linked to increased levels of stress and anxiety among students, denying them the crucial chance to rest and recharge after school hours. In fact, the National Education Association recommends no more than 10 minutes of homework per grade level, yet many students face well beyond that amount each night.
Children need time after school to engage in extracurricular activities, pursue hobbies, or simply relax with family and friends. This balance is not just essential for a healthy lifestyle, but crucial in cultivating well-rounded individuals. Education should inspire and motivate, not create an environment of dread. Other countries with high-performing education systems have noted this imbalance and have shifted their focus towards a more balanced approach.
In Finland, for example, students consistently rank at the top globally without being burdened by nightly hours of homework. Their education system emphasizes quality over quantity, giving students freedom to explore, innovate, and learn at their own pace outside the classroom.
We call on school boards across our nation to reevaluate the role of homework in educational curricula. Let's eliminate or significantly reduce homework to prioritize the mental health and holistic development of our children. The well-being of our children should not be sacrificed in the pursuit of academic excellence.
Let's make a change for the better. Sign this petition to call on school authorities to ban excessive homework and give our children the childhood they deserve. Together, we can foster an education system that uplifts rather than overwhelms.
