It's been a while since my last update - these past few weeks have been a struggle. My mom had another cancer scare (she is thankfully ok!), the world's racial injustices have been put under a magnifying glass, and we're seeing the biggest civil rights movement unfold in real time. #BLACKLIVESMATTER and we should be able to say it unapologetically.
This time in the world is important and I am feeling the pull to amplify my mother's voice, our voices. The pain of racism that countless families have faced around the world, including my own, is finally being heard and change is happening.
Hair discrimination is real, and it's racist. What has been interesting to see is how big brands like Clairol, Revlon and more have optically shown up to support the #blacklivesmatter movement. Yet their products still contain toxic chemicals that impact black lives the worst.
When your hair is killing you slowly - this is often a racial justice issue that goes under the radar. This is personal. As you know my mom, a Black woman in America, is a breast cancer fighter and has chemically straightened and dyed her hair since she was a child.
Hair products marketed to Black women in the U.S. are largely untested and unregulated, the majority of which contain carcinogenic chemicals linked to the development of reproductive and respiratory disease.
That's why I wanted to share with you a new 10-slide Instagram infographic that I created to raise awareness about the stark racial health inequality that exists in hair care. The goal is to get the infographic shared far and wide to thousands of people with a call to action to sign the petition and join the #toxicfreehair movement.
