Did you know it’s been a whopping 80 YEARS since the U.S. Congress last enacted federal cosmetic safety legislation? It is an understatement to say that federal law on this issue needs a serious revamp! That’s why today I am asking you to support me in getting behind a new bill called the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019! This legislation would be the first in the nation to ensure that beauty and personal care products are safer for everyone. It would finally give the FDA the power and resources it needs to more strictly regulate these industries.
At the moment, there is virtually no federal oversight of the safety of ingredients in the cosmetics and personal care products we use, including hair dyes and straighteners. According to Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019 is "the only federal bill that would immediately ban more than a dozen of the worst toxic chemicals from cosmetics, fund research into safer alternatives, address the over-exposure of communities of color to toxic chemicals, require full fragrance ingredient disclosure, and ban most animal testing.”
The U.S. is massively behind other parts of the world -- in the EU at least 1,300 chemicals are banned or restricted in cosmetics such as shampoos, soaps, dyes and nail polish, while the US has outlawed or limited only 11.
Today I’m asking you to please contact your Congressional Representative, asking them to co-sponsor and support the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019, we need as many representatives to support this as possible!

I am contacting you as one of your constituents to ask you to please co-sponsor H.R. 4296, the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019.
I’m asking you to co-sponsor this bill because, under current law, cosmetic companies can use almost any chemical ingredient in products without first having to prove it is safe for consumers. The Government must put a stop to the use of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products, which have devastating consequences to people’s health and the environment.
