Ban GoGuardian from Milwaukee Public Schools

Ban GoGuardian from Milwaukee Public Schools
The Issue
As a student at Milwaukee Public Schools, I've constantly found myself limited by the restrictions imposed by GoGuardian. It's not just about blocked games like 'Steal A Brainrot' that many students, including myself, enjoy as a form of relaxation and fun. It's about the larger issue of how intrusive this software is in our daily school lives.
GoGuardian markets itself as a tool to keep students focused and safe online. However, the reality is that it often invades our privacy and stifles our creativity. The software can monitor every digital move we make, creating an environment of constant surveillance that feels more like a prison than a place of learning. According to a report published by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), student monitoring software like GoGuardian disproportionately impacts students of color and those in lower-income districts, further exacerbating educational inequalities.
Moreover, there's a growing body of evidence suggesting that such extreme measures of surveillance do not significantly improve student performance. An analysis conducted by the National Education Policy Center concluded that these monitoring tools often fail to achieve their stated goals and instead cultivate distrust between students and educators.
Milwaukee Public Schools should be a place where students feel empowered and trusted, not surveilled and restricted.* We urge school administrators and decision-makers to reconsider the use of GoGuardian and explore alternative solutions that respect student privacy and foster an environment of trust and openness.
There are better ways to ensure online safety that do not sacrifice our individual freedoms—such as digital citizenship programs that educate students on responsible internet usage. By teaching rather than surveilling, we can create a more respectful and effective educational experience.
Sign this petition to support a learning environment that prioritizes trust, freedom, and genuine educational growth over intrusive surveillance. Together, we can make a difference.
