Privacy is a right.

As a student trying to navigate the complexities of school life, it is increasingly frustrating to feel constantly monitored and scrutinized. Recently, GoGuardian has gone too far by invading our privacy in alarming ways, notably by accessing our cameras, falsely flagging innocent activity, and sharing private data with our families without consent. This invasion of privacy is not only troubling but unacceptable.

GoGuardian's system has been designed to ensure student safety and maintain academic integrity. However, its execution often crosses boundaries, violating our basic rights as students. For instance, imagine you are simply researching for a project, and suddenly your activity is flagged, setting off a chain of unnecessary and embarrassing investigations. This breach of privacy impacts our ability to study freely and affects our sense of security.

The overreach extends even into our homes, as the use of school-issued devices enables schools to watch our personal spaces through activated cameras. This is not an educational measure; it is a breach of trust. Moreover, sharing flagged information with families often leads to misunderstandings, further straining family relationships.

Students deserve a fair chance to study without feeling like they're under constant surveillance. It is crucial for educational institutions to revisit and revise these privacy policies to ensure that the rights of their students are respected. This can be achieved by focusing on less intrusive monitoring methods, seeking to educate rather than punish, and ensuring student information remains confidential unless there is an explicit and valid reason to share it.

It's even more hurtful because I unfortunately remember a time where I had no other device to use to get help. So I went to the Trevor Project, my activity was flagged and my mother found out. She now is always suspicious of me and it feels terrible. I really don't want this to happen to anyone else and I hope that no one even has to be in such a situation. I strongly believe that GoGuardian has absolutely NO right to go through our history and such like this. All I needed was help and was insanely penalized for it.
