Ban glyphosate use in Cruickshank Park, Yarraville
The issue
Cruickshank Park in Yarraville is more than just a park: it’s our shared backyard.
Cruickshank Park isn’t a manicured botanical garden. It’s a natural bushland reserve, beloved by the community for its open, wild character. Children run barefoot along the trails. Dogs romp freely in the grass. Families picnic under the trees.
So why is Maribyrnong City Council still using glyphosate-based herbicides like RoundUp in this thriving community space , especially when it's not even necessary?
❗ Why we're concerned
Glyphosate has been linked to cancer classified by the World Health Organization. Studies have also linked it to endocrine disruption, liver damage, and potential harm to the microbiome. Children and pets are especially vulnerable to exposure due to their size and proximity to sprayed surfaces.
Despite growing international concern and bans in countries such as Germany, France, and parts of the US, our council continues to use this chemical in our beloved park without community consultation — putting all of us at risk.
🚫 Glyphosate Doesn’t Belong in Natural Bushland
Unlike formal gardens or sports ovals that require tightly controlled weed suppression, Cruickshank Park doesn’t need chemical tidiness. It's a bushland corridor, home to native flora, pollinators, and community life.
Using glyphosate here isn’t just overkill. It’s reckless.
Despite Council’s claims of “minimised use,” these chemicals are being sprayed along pathways, beside tennis courts, and near dog-walking routes. These are high-traffic areas where exposure risk is real: especially for children and animals.
🗳 What we’re calling for
We, the undersigned, demand that Maribyrnong City Council:
Immediately and permanently ban glyphosate and all chemical weed management use in Cruickshank Park.
Recognise that natural bushland areas do not require intensive weed control using chemical agents.
🫶 Join us in protecting Cruickshank Park
This is not about politics: it’s about basic public health, transparency, and community trust. We deserve to enjoy our parks without worrying about toxic chemical exposure.

Together, we can make Cruickshank Park a safer place for all — now and for future generations. 🌿
