Ban Glyphosate (Roundup) in the United States because it is poisoning so many foods

The Issue

“New research by top US government scientists has found that people exposed to the widely used weedkilling chemical glyphosate have biomarkers in their urine linked to the development of cancer and other diseases.

The study findings come after the CDC reported last year that more than 80% of urine samples drawn from children and adults contained glyphosate.“ (Source: The Guardian, 01.20.2023)

The risk applies not just to farmers or landscapers - all of us are at risk because we are consuming glyphosate in contaminated food and beverages. Such a broad spectrum of food items contain glyphosate, that it seems extremely difficult to avoid without a nation-wide (or maybe even global) ban.

Check out the list of foods testing positive for the weed killer/suspected carcinogen glyphosate (Source: Sokolove Law 2019):

  • Granola by Quaker, KIND, Back to Nature, Nature Valley
  • Instant oats by Giant, Quaker, Umpqua, Market Pantry
  • Whole oats by Quaker, Bob's Red Mill, Nature's Path, Whole Foods
  • Cereal by Kashi, Kellogg's, including Lucky Charms and Cheerios
  • Snack bars by Quaker, KIND, Nature Valley, Kellogg's
  • Orange juice by Tropicana, Minute Maid, Signature Farms, Kirkland
  • Crackers, including Cheez-Its, Ritz, Triscuits, Goldfish
  • Cookies by Annie's, Kashi, and Nabisco (Oreos)
  • Chips by Stacy's, Lay's, Doritos, Fritos
  • Most beer & most wine

Please note: Even many foods labeled organic test positive for glyphosate due to wind/overspray and water runoff, so you have to individually research which items are truly glyphosate-free.

Some industry reps may argue that amounts in food are small or under allowable limits, but government standards aren’t always adequate to keep people safe and healthy. “In one study, scientists found that 1 part per trillion of glyphosate has the potential to stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells and disrupt the endocrine system.” (Source: EcoWatch, 2019) The other big challenge is that because glyphosate is showing up in so many foods and beverages, there is higher risk due to cumulative effect. You aren’t just being exposed in one food, you are likely getting exposures from many different sources.

In a first-world, highly-developed nation, we shouldn’t have to worry about eating poisons like this. They should be regulated out of industry. Why do profits always come before people? If you would like to see our government ban glyphosate, please sign below.
