Ban Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers in Narberth Borough

Ban Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers in Narberth Borough
The Issue
The problem with gas-powered leaf blowers
We, the undersigned, request that Narberth Borough Council and the Mayor enact an ordinance to phase out the use and sale of gas-powered leaf blowers in Narberth Borough. Shifting to battery-powered leaf blowers means less pollution, less noise and less risk for workers and residents and the environment as a whole.
Leaf blowers aren’t just noisy — they’re also huge climate polluters
Gas-powered leaf blowers pump out millions of tons of carbon dioxide each year, and are a significant contributor to climate change. "Gas-powered leaf blowers emit tiny particles as well as gasses that contribute to ground level ozone — which can exacerbate lung conditions like asthma. According to the California Air Resources Board, running a commercial leaf blower for an hour emits as much smog-forming pollution as driving a car over 1,000 miles."
Why some Philadelphians want gas-powered leaf blowers to disappear
Gas-powered leaf blowers create extreme noise pollution, up to 100 decibels of low-frequency noise (think commercial jets taking off) and the emissions contain dangerous particulate matter that can penetrate deep into our lungs and bloodstream causing serious health problems over time. They are a threat to pubic health.
The cost and benefits of electric leaf blowers
Companies will benefit in the long run
• Employees will be healthier and likely not require ear protection.
• Electric leaf blowers are more cost-effective than their gas-powered counterparts over the long run.
• With a transition period and possible grants and rebates, a transition is financially feasible.
Hear that? It’s the sound of leaf blower bans.
Many cities and municipalities and even states have banned gas-powered leaf blowers. Among them are Washington, D.C., Miami Beach, Florida, Evanston, Illinois, state of California, with Portland and Seattle coming soon.
Make America Rake Again
Please enact an ordinance to ban gas-powered leaf-blowers as soon as possible to protect our community and environment.
