Ban Gambling Adverts on Facebook

The Issue

There was a time when I felt safe browsing through my Facebook feed. One day, lured by a captivating advertisement for a casino called Memo Casino, I decided to give it a try, believing in the promise of easy wins and thrilling experiences. Little did I know that this decision would lead to a devastating loss of £1400. This scam, cleverly disguised as an opportunity for excitement and profit, deceived me, and I know I am not alone.

Online gambling adverts on platforms like Facebook have become increasingly predatory, targeting vulnerable individuals. Studies have shown that social media platforms are a hotbed for gambling advertisements, with thousands of individuals across the globe falling victim to these schemes. These ads are algorithmically tailored to reach those most susceptible, including young people and individuals struggling with addiction. According to Statista, online gambling losses in the UK alone hit about £5.7 billion in 2020, and part of this staggering number can be attributed to misleading advertisements.

Furthermore, Facebook's advertising policies ostensibly claim that they prevent such predatory behavior. Yet, the reality is far different. These ads continue to infiltrate our feeds, often bypassing controls that are supposed to safeguard users.

The solution is clear and actionable: immediate and stringent enforcement of advertising policies to ban all forms of gambling adverts on Facebook. By eliminating these adverts, we take a significant step in protecting users from falling into financial and emotional distress.

Facebook has a responsibility to its users. We call upon Facebook to cease all gambling advertisements and take a stand against this ongoing exploitation. Please sign this petition to demand action against gambling adverts on Facebook and safeguard the well-being of its community.
