RISE/Solidarity TD Paul Murphy has asked the Minister for Agriculture when fur farming will be banned in Ireland and how many mink are currently caged in the country’s three remaining fur farm hellholes.

In his 20 May 2021 Dail Question, the Dublin South West TD asked the Minister for Agriculture about "plans for banning mink fur farming and the current population of mink in such farms in Ireland".

Responding, Minister Charlie McConalogue stated: “The Programme for Government contains a commitment on the prohibition of fur farming and Department officials have been working on appropriate steps to give effect to this. The Department is finalising the Heads of a Bill to provide for the introduction of a ban on fur farming which will include a prohibition on mink farming. The Bill will make it illegal for any new fur farms to be established and will provide for the closure of the small number of existing farm operations. The Bill includes a compensation provision to provide compensation that is fair and reasonable to the three farmers concerned.”

In relation to the number of doomed animals caged in the fur farms, Minister McConalogue said that “the total number of mink on the three farms depends on the stage of production at that point of time in the year - the numbers increase when the breeding females have offspring born.”

“We are currently at the stage when the females have started giving birth,” he added. “At the end of 2020, there were approximately 110,000 farmed mink in Ireland.”

In cruel fur farming, mink are permanently caged and at six months of age, they are pulled out, thrown into a gassing box and poisoned with Carbon Monoxide gas before the fur is pulled from their bodies.

ACTION ALERT

Despite a commitment in the Programme for Government to ban fur farming, it still continues. Please join us in demanding an immediate closure of the country’s three remaining fur farms and a long overdue ban on this shameful activity.
