The Issue

Flock Safety Cameras are becoming a common sight in Somerset, Kentucky, but this isn't necessarily a good thing. These devices, positioned throughout our community, come with significant privacy concerns. As a resident deeply invested in the well-being and constitutional rights of our community, I feel compelled to take a stand against their presence.

First and foremost, these cameras potentially infringe upon our Fourth Amendment rights. The Fourth Amendment guarantees the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures. With Flock Safety being a privately owned company, they could potentially share or even sell the data they collect from these cameras to anyone, including parties with self-serving agendas. There's a real threat that what is sold under the guise of public safety easily turns into a breach of privacy.

Moreover, there is the impending issue of technology escalation. Flock has plans to switch from fixed location cameras to permanent drone cameras in the future. This raises further concerns about constant and invasive surveillance in our lives, amplifying the sense of being watched at all times. What seemingly starts as a well-intentioned move towards community safety could quickly spiral into a system of continuous monitoring that steps over our fundamental right to privacy.

There is also no substantial evidence to support Flock's claim of reducing crime. Despite the company's assurances, these cameras have not proven to help solve previous crimes effectively. In reality, the word "safety" might just be a tool used to impose a corporation’s will upon the public, without genuinely enhancing the security of our neighborhoods.

It's crucial for us, as residents of Somerset, to make a stand for our rights and prioritize both safety and privacy equally. We don’t need to trade our freedom for unproven levels of security. I urge you to seriously consider the implications of Flock Safety Cameras on our community and individual rights.

Please join me in this cause to ban Flock Safety Cameras in our community and protect our right to privacy. Sign this petition and let our voices be heard by those who have the power to effect change.
