Ban flock cameras in St. Mary's County MD
The Issue
I am running for Commissioner in District 3 of St. Mary's County, Maryland, because I am deeply concerned about the increasing intrusion of surveillance technology in our daily lives. One such worrisome technology is flock cameras, which have been deployed in our county under the guise of enhancing public safety. However, I firmly believe that they represent a gross violation of our privacy rights and are emblematic of "big brother" at its worst.
Flock cameras are advanced surveillance tools that capture and store detailed footage of public spaces, often without the consent of those being recorded. This raises significant privacy concerns, as these cameras have the potential to monitor law-abiding citizens without their knowledge. The state of Maryland has a rich history of valuing individual freedoms and privacy, and the use of such invasive technology runs counter to our core values.
Moreover, the effectiveness of flock cameras in crime prevention is highly questionable. Studies have shown that while these cameras might result in slight improvements in solving certain crimes, they do not provide a substantial deterrent against criminal activity. Instead, they often lead to a false sense of security among community members while diverting resources away from more effective policing strategies, such as community engagement and foot patrols.
In addition, there are concerns over how the data collected by flock cameras is stored and who has access to it. With increasing reports of data breaches across various sectors, the risk of sensitive information falling into the wrong hands is a grave concern. Ensuring cybersecurity and protecting citizens' data are critical, and the implementation of flock cameras jeopardizes this commitment.
As a community, we need to prioritize policies that safeguard our personal freedoms and focus on genuine community-based solutions to improve safety. I am committed to advocating for more transparent law enforcement practices and measures that respect our privacy rather than undermine it.
I urge the residents of St. Mary's County to join me in taking a stand against the deployment of flock cameras in our community. Together, we can send a strong message that privacy and freedom are non-negotiable values we are willing to fight for. Sign this petition to demand the removal of flock cameras in St. Mary's County and protect our rights.
