The Issue

As a resident of Johnson City, TN, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision by our local government to sign a long-term 10-year contract with Flock Safety for the installation of flock cameras across our city. This decision was made without adequately consulting the public and using taxpayers' money, which has directly led to an increase in property taxes. We deserve to have a say in how our funds are spent, especially when it affects us financially and impacts our privacy.

Flock cameras, known for their ability to capture license plate data and vehicle information, pose significant privacy concerns. They create a surveillance infrastructure that tracks our daily movements and records personal data without our consent. This technology, while marketed as a crime-fighting tool, has not shown definitive statistical evidence of effectively reducing crime rates in similar cities where they have been deployed.

Moreover, the contract was signed without transparency or prior discussions with the community. Involving the community in such significant decisions is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring that our privacy and financial interests are safeguarded. It’s imperative that we re-evaluate the necessity and effectiveness of such surveillance measures before burdening taxpayers with additional costs.

We propose that the city council immediately halt the implementation of flock cameras and conduct a thorough review involving public input and consideration of alternative, non-invasive methods to enhance public safety. Additionally, financial audits should be conducted to investigate the justifications for increased taxes and ensure fiscal responsibilities are adhered to.

By signing this petition, you stand with the community for transparency, accountability, and the protection of our privacy. It’s time for our voices to be heard and for our concerns to be addressed by those in power. Join us in urging Johnson City officials to reconsider this contract and explore better solutions for our city. Sign the petition to demand change today.
