Living in Hillsborough County, a place I call home, has introduced me to a new and disturbing invasion of privacy. These flock cameras, which have been rapidly installed around our community, are raising legitimate concerns about constant surveillance, particularly in private and sensitive areas, without any option for residents to opt out. They are monitoring every move we make, often catching children in the scope of their lenses, all while leaving residents powerless to challenge this invasive watch.

For many of us, having these cameras recording our daily lives feels like living in a space where there’s no respect for personal privacy or consent, even in our private domains. It is unsettling to know that we are being watched without any possibility of excluding ourselves from such scrutiny.

The intent of these cameras may be to increase safety; however, the trade-off is the intrusion into personal lives and the recording of children with no parental consent. This is not the community surveillance and safety we envisioned—one that respects personal privacy while maintaining public security.

Clearly, there must be a balance between safety and privacy. We propose a ban on these flock cameras until a comprehensive, publicly-reviewed policy is formulated, ensuring all installations respect personal boundaries, include clear, accessible opt-out procedures, and are not placed in sensitive or private areas.
