We are deeply concerned about the proliferation of FLOCK cameras in our community. These AI powered surveillance devices encroach upon our 4th amendment rights to privacy and contribute to a broader movement towards a surveillance state. We strongly believe that these cameras are invasive, portraying an overreaching governmental control that feels more like human hunting rather than protecting our rights as citizens. These cameras log license plates, makes and models of cars, stickers, distinctive markings, take pictures of the drivers and establish all of it in a searchable database. This constitutes a warrantless search and a breach of citizens' constitutional rights. The presence of FLOCK cameras raises significant privacy concerns. According to a report by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, surveillance technologies like these disproportionately impact minority communities and can lead to biased policing practices. It's essential to remember that privacy is a fundamental right, and constant monitoring can create an environment where individuals feel intimidated or unfairly targeted. Additionally, there are multiple cases being investigated around the US of officers accessing the system without authority to stalk individuals and cases of federal agencies illegally accessing information which city and state taxes pay for.  Furthermore, we are troubled by the possibility of Measure P funds being allocated to expand the use of these cameras. Measure P is designed to support essential community projects and should not be diverted to support surveillance technology that invades our privacy. This use of funds is not only inappropriate but also reckless, especially when our community faces pressing needs such as education, healthcare, and sustainable infrastructure. We urge local government officials to halt any new contracts concerning FLOCK cameras and to cease the use of any Measure P funding for this technology. Instead, resources should be directed towards initiatives that genuinely enhance community well-being and foster trust between authorities and the people.
