The issue

I've proudly called Darwin my home for over 20 years. Running a wildlife rescue organization and working in the veterinary industry, I've seen firsthand the chaos that fireworks cause every year. Territory Day should be a celebration of our great state, not a time to disrespect its beauty and tranquility.

Fireworks set off near homes, vehicles, or treelines cause significant harm to wildlife, increase workloads for firefighters, council workers and emergency services, and greatly effects the broader community. Birds are displaced from their nests, pets experience extreme distress often needing sedation, and countless people with PTSD, children with autism, and those with sensory issues are deeply affected.

Increased instances of wildfires and noise disturbances undermine the safety and well-being of our communities. It’s high time we take a stand and implement measures to protect our environment and residents.

We are calling for legislation to ban the setting off of fireworks within 100 meters of any house, vehicle, or treeline in the northern suburbs. Additionally, we urge the government to allocate specific safe areas in these suburbs where community members can responsibly use fireworks without causing harm.

This change not only respects our natural environment but ensures a safer and more inclusive celebration for everyone. Let’s keep the spirit of Territory Day alive while prioritizing the health and safety of all Darwin residents and wildlife.

Join me in making this crucial change by signing this petition. Together, we can protect our community, preserve our wildlife, and celebrate responsibly.
