The Issue

Living in Greenville, SC, a city known for its vibrant community spirit, I have always found joy in communal celebrations. However, the constant barrage of fireworks, especially during festive seasons, has turned my neighborhood into a warzone, leaving me and many others feeling distressed and helpless. The loud bangs and intense flashes are not merely an annoyance; they can be deeply traumatizing for those among us who suffer from PTSD.

The impact of fireworks isn't limited to people alone. Animals, too, face severe stress and anxiety due to the explosive noises. Dogs panic, cats hide for days, and wildlife is startled, disrupting their habitats. As citizens, we pride ourselves on being considerate and community-focused, yet we continue to overlook the distress that fireworks cause to our vulnerable neighbors and wildlife.

A scientific study published by 'Applied Animal Behaviour Science' reveals that 45% of dogs show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. Similarly, a survey conducted by the National Center for PTSD highlights that veterans and individuals with PTSD are significantly affected by loud, sudden noises, akin to those produced by fireworks.

It is crucial for us to address this problem. By creating designated zones away from residential areas for firework displays or opting for silent fireworks which offer the spectacle without the noise, we can mitigate the distress caused, while still preserving the joy and tradition of celebratory displays.

I urge the County of Greenville, SC, to take immediate action by banning the use of fireworks in residential neighborhoods. Let us come together to protect our community members and animals who suffer in silence. Sign this petition to support a ban on fireworks in Greenville county neighborhoods. Your signature can make a significant difference in creating a peaceful and inclusive environment for everyone.
