BAN FIREWORKS FOR SALE TO THE PUBLIC

BAN FIREWORKS FOR SALE TO THE PUBLIC
The Issue
After reading today’s devastating news that youths in Liverpool set a tower block alight and then targeted emergency responders with rockets as they attempted to battle the blaze, I am compelled to call for a ban on the general sale of fireworks to the public. Each year, our streets transform into war zones, as young people wield fireworks as tools of terror against communities and emergency services. This poses unacceptable risks to public safety, disrupts communal life, and endangers lives and properties.
Many are unaware of the historic significance behind Guy Fawkes Night – a commemoration largely obscured by chaos. It’s high time we re-evaluate this practice and propose a shift towards safer, more controlled celebrations. Licensed firework displays, managed by professionals, offer a safe alternative that allows for cultural observance without endangering our communities.
The statistics are alarming: incidents involving fireworks surge around the 5th of November. According to government reports, firework-related injuries consistently overwhelm medical services, while emergency services are stretched thin attending to fires and disturbances directly attributed to careless use by individuals who, in many cases, are underage and unsupervised.
Moreover, the distress caused to pets and wildlife is considerable, with countless animals fleeing in panic, becoming injured or lost as a result. Our emergency services, too, deserve protection from unnecessary risks. They work tirelessly to ensure public safety and should not be under siege by the very people they are trying to protect.
By restricting firework sales to licensed events only, we can drastically reduce the collateral damage, allowing professional operators to provide memorable experiences that honour tradition without compromising safety. Fireworks should not be instruments of fear – let's restore their rightful place as facilitators of joy, wonder, and community coherence.
Join us in urging the government to take immediate action. Protect our communities, our animals, and our dedicated emergency services. Sign this petition to demand a ban on fireworks sales to the general public, for a safer and more harmonious society.
