Ban festivals from selling hermit crabs and goldfish
The Issue
I still remember the excitement of attending my first festival as a child, the vibrant colors, joyous laughter, and the allure of winning a prize. However, that joy quickly turned to concern when I noticed the sad reality behind some of the most popular festival attractions—hermit crabs and goldfish, handed out like disposable toys to “unsuspecting” winners. These creatures are far more delicate and demanding than they seem.
Hermit crabs, for example, are highly sensitive creatures that require specific conditions to thrive. They need a warm, humid environment, deep substrate for burrowing, and a safe home in which to molt. In contrast, carnival vendors house them in inadequate cardboard cages or plastic containers, subjecting them to dehydration and eventual suffocation. This absence of education and disregard for their biological needs lead many to a painful demise.
Similarly, goldfish, who naturally roam in large bodies of water, are repeatedly kept in minuscule bowls that stifle their growth and lead to physical deformities. Not only are these containers too small, but they also lack the necessary filtration systems that maintain water quality essential for their health.
The vendors and organizers of these events are aware that they are not providing the education or the means necessary for these animals to survive beyond the festival grounds. Statistics suggest that over 60% of hermit crabs die within the first year of their sale at festivals, and countless goldfish meet similar fates. This need not be the outcome.
We urge local governments and event organizers to take immediate action by banning the sale of hermit crabs and goldfish at festivals, fairs, and carnivals. This step is not only an ethical obligation but a crucial move towards responsible animal care and public education. Communities can still enjoy their festive celebrations without contributing to the inhumane treatment of these innocent creatures.
Let's come together to make our voices heard. Sign this petition, and help stop this needless suffering. Together, we can ensure festivals are places of joy, not sites of suffering.
