Ban euthanasia of healthy and adoptable animals

The Issue

Sachi was a beautiful, friendly dog who was simply too big for the adopters who initially took her home. She found herself back in a shelter, through no fault of her own, awaiting a second chance that sadly never came. The rescue organization only became aware of her one day after she was already scheduled for euthanasia, leaving no time to save her life.

Tragically, Sachi was euthanized before she could find a new home, becoming another victim of a system that often discards healthy and adoptable animals too swiftly. This heartbreaking outcome emphasizes the urgent need for reform in how shelters handle animals deemed "surplus" to requirements.

We are calling for legislative action in the United States to prohibit the euthanasia of animals like Sachi, those who are both physically and mentally healthy and treatable. It's time for shelters to make immediate contact with all local rescues the day an animal is returned to ensure every chance is given for adoption.

Moreover, we petition for the repeal of rigid euthanasia deadlines that do not account for the circumstances that caused animals to end up in shelters in the first place. These deadlines rob creatures of the time needed to find loving new homes and can lead to unnecessary loss of lives.

The story of Sachi must not be repeated. We must ensure that no other adoptable animals meet a premature end due to time constraints and lack of coordination between shelters and rescue organizations. By putting systems in place that prioritize the welfare and rehoming of animals, rather than treating them as expendable when they become inconvenient, we can build a kinder, more compassionate world for our furry companions.

Please sign this petition to demand an end to the euthanasia of healthy and adoptable animals and to urge the establishment of more humane, effective policies for dealing with returned shelter animals. Together, we can honor Sachi’s memory by making sure her story sparks change.
