The Issue

My name is Amber Woods, and I am a legacy resident of St. Petersburg, Florida. Like many of my neighbors, I cherish the beautiful community we have built here and am deeply concerned about the unregulated expansion of data centers in our area. Data centers, which are essentially vast warehouses of computers, consume enormous amounts of electricity and water resources. As they proliferate unchecked, these centers pose a significant threat to our environment and quality of life.

Florida’s only state-level legislation addressing this issue, Senate Bill 484, is insufficient. It only targets large-scale data centers, and as such, it leaves a loophole that advantages developers who are keen on exploiting land development opportunities by establishing data centers that just skirt under the regulatory limits set by the State. This oversight could lead to hidden environmental and infrastructural impacts that our current community is ill-prepared to handle.

Data centers require huge amounts of power, water, and land resources. The Uptime Institute reports that data centers use about 2% of the global electricity supply and contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases by producing approximately the same level of CO2 as the airline industry. Moreover, they often require large cooling systems, which can lead to draining our precious water resources, potentially affecting our local supply.

In St. Petersburg, known for its vibrant arts scene, scenic waterfronts, and close-knit neighborhoods, the unchecked expansion of data centers could devastate the qualities that make it unique. The constant noise, increased traffic from construction, and potential property devaluation could irreversibly alter our beloved community.

Therefore, we urgently call upon the St. Petersburg City Council and Florida State Legislature to enact a permanent ban on the establishment of new data centers within city limits. A comprehensive and clear legislative approach is crucial to protect our environment, health, and prosperity.

Join us in making our voices heard. Help us protect our community, our homes, and our future from the unnecessary and avoidable repercussions of unregulated data center expansion.

Sign this petition today to urge our lawmakers to take swift and decisive action before it's too late.
