Ban cycling throughout Southton Road

The Issue

As a resident of the Southton Road area, I have witnessed firsthand the dangers that arise from allowing cyclists to travel on this particular stretch of road. Southton Road is a busy two-way street with numerous blind curves, and eight distinct communities rely heavily on it to access their homes. Beyond the residential traffic, a large distribution warehouse in the vicinity sees a constant flow of semi trailers navigating in and out, complicating the situation further.

On several occasions, I have seen groups of cyclists attempt to maneuver through the traffic, frequently ignoring road signs and regulations. These groups not only create congestion but also pose risks by holding up vital vehicles like buses and even ambulances. The situation often escalates to near-collisions with large trucks, putting everyone—cyclists, drivers, and even pedestrians—in danger. Such conditions are clearly unacceptable in a bustling community, where the safety of all should be a priority.

The presence of school buses adds another layer of complexity to the issue. At times when schoolchildren are boarding or alighting from buses, the road becomes even more congested, and cyclists struggling for space exacerbate the problem.

It's time for proactive measures to enhance the safety of all road users in our area. By banning cycling on Southton Road, we can significantly reduce the risks associated with shared roadways in this specific location. Cyclists can be encouraged to use alternate, more suitable routes that ensure their safety and do not impede the flow of essential local traffic.

I urge the local council to take immediate action—prioritize the wellbeing of our community, the safety of our commuting children, and the efficacy of emergency services.

Sign this petition to help protect Southton Road from becoming a site of potential tragedy before it is too late. Together, let's ensure a safer environment for everyone in our community.
