Dear Editor,
I’m delighted to see that a prominent conservation group deems the Irish Hare to be the third cutest animal on the planet!
The study by Explore Worldwide used complex eye-tracking technology to ascertain which animals humans find most captivating.
This ought to a source of pride and joy to us. The Irish Hare is a sub-species of the Mountain Hare unique to Ireland and one of our few endemic species.
People who spot a hare on a stroll in the countryside notice its speed and the whiteness of its tail as it disappears over the horizon or through a hedgerow. In March you might see one of those famous boxing matches between hares, which are really females warding off unwanted male suiters.
If you see a hare in summer it has gingery skin, changing to a shade of grayish brown in winter. And it has been around for so long: Since before the last Ice Age of 10,000 years ago and possibly for another 60,000 years before that.
But the honour bestowed on this charming mammal is overshadowed by the continued legality of coursing. Incredibly, successive governments allow coursing clubs to snatch hares from their natural; and supposedly “protected” habitat. They are then forced to run from dogs in front of “sportspeople”. This iconic creature can end up being mauled, or with bones broken, or literally stressed to death, from the ordeal…all for a gamble and a laugh.
How sad that we tolerate such treatment of an animal that clearly enchants so many of us. Over its long presence here, the hare has weathered many challenges. It shared a frozen landscape with bears and wooly mammoths, eons before humans, let alone coursing clubs, were heard of on this island.
Today, it’s battling against habitat loss, mainly due to the effects of modern farming and urban sprawl.
Even in the midst of a biodiversity crisis, our politicians see fit to throw this treasure of our wildlife heritage to the dogs. Have they no shame?
I’ve heard its plaintive cry many a time at coursing events. Poets have likened it to that of the mythical banshee in Irish folklore.
So, while it’s nice to know that our native hare is the third cutest animal in the world, according to the study, it’s a pity our TDs and Senators can’t bring themselves to put its wellbeing - and survival as a species - before political self-interest and the love of power.
