1 hare was euthanised by a vet after suffering injuries at a Bandon & Carey's Cross / Macroom coursing meeting in November.

The disturbing details are contained in recently released reports published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service – which disgracefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of the Heritage Minister. They show that a NPWS conservation ranger (who was there to monitor the persecution of this supposedly protected species) noted that:

On Day 1 of the three-day animal cruelty event (26, 27, 28 November 2024), 1 hare was caught by dogs and pinned to the ground. This hare was not examined for injuries so the animal’s condition is unknown.

On Day 2 of the, 3 hares were pinned by dogs and 6 hares were examined for injuries. 4 hares required treatment for injuries and one of them was “euthanised as a result of injuries” by the coursing club’s vet.

On Day 3, 1 hare was hit and 1 was pinned. Two were examined for injuries and 1 required treatment for “injuries confirmed by attending vet”. In stark contrast, the vet’s report shows that zero hares were confirmed injured on day 3.

The hares were among 41 captured from the wild in nets between  28 October and 16 November 2024 and held in captivity for up to 33 days. The vet had shamefully certified these hares "fit for coursing".

The coursers claimed one hare escaped and 39 were released. However, according to figures on the ranger’s report, just 38 hares were released.

Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this cruel bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.

Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales).
