Two hares were hit by dogs and two were pinned to the ground during a coursing meeting at Borrisoleigh, newly released documents show.
Documents published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service – which shamefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien – show that on Day 1 of the 3-day cruelty event, two hares were hit by the dogs and one was pinned to the ground. Just one of these hares was examined for injuries by the coursing club's vet. This vet disgracefully certified the hares “fit for coursing”.
On Day 3, a National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger, who was present to monitor the terrorisation of the supposedly protected species, reported that one hare was caught and pinned to the ground. In contrast, the coursers claimed on their report form that zero hares were pinned on Day 3.
This unfortunate hare was not examined for injuries.

Shame on the vet who “certified the hares fit for coursing” and shame on the Irish Government for allowing this obscenity to continue, despite majority support for a ban.

HELP THE HARES: Tell Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Malcolm Noonan to give full protection to the Irish Hare and stop licensing cruel coursing.
