Animals forced to "perform" in all weathers
The Avondhu: November 9th 2023
Dear Editor,
The past few weeks have provided more evidence - if such were needed - of the climate change that is wreaking havoc worldwide. But you wouldn’t think that anything was amiss with the weather to judge by the behaviour of Ireland’s coursing fraternity.
Undaunted by the ravages of Mother Nature, followers of a blood sport that dates back to the Roman Coliseum gathered at venues nationwide last weekend and the one before to watch hares zigzag across fields lashed by rain and high winds.
As if twisting and dodging in a fight for survival weren’t challenging enough in crisp dry weather, it seems that the sportspeople have to put the unfortunate hares through their paces on even the worst of days.
Thus it is that the gentlest creature in the Irish countryside must perform, while those who savour its sad plight huddle safely behind the wire, smoking, drinking or marking their betting cards, and of course all of them decked out in the best of snug winter gear.
No discomfort for them, let alone the terror and trauma of a “game” that can result in agonizing injury or death on the field or a slow, lonely demise in the wild afterwards from stress-related ailments arising from a contrived chase and the weeks of unnatural captivity preceding it.
Someday, perhaps a compassionate government will find the courage to say NO to the coursing lobby. Until then, our iconic hares must continue to run for their lives in hail rain and snow.
At least they have speed and agility on their side, if not our gutless politicians…
John Fitzgerald,
Callan, Co. Kilkenny

With a RED C opinion poll confirming that a 77 per cent majority of citizens want hare coursing banned (with just 9% disagreeing with a ban), it is now time for politicians to consign this nasty bloodsport to history. Join us in contacting all TDs and urging them to act to ensure that a ban is urgently introduced. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
