Unfortunate timing for holiday honouring Brigid

Dear Editor,
I find it unsettling, even abhorrent, that the holiday honouring St. Brigid happened to coincide with day two of the three-day so-called National Festival of Hare Coursing: February 6th.
Brigid is renowned for her love of animals and nature. When she moved into a hut under a giant oak tree in the future Kildare she developed a rapport with all the wild creatures of the forest. She asked the many pilgrims who came to her for healing to show kindness to animals, domestic and wild. According to legend, she rescued stray and starving dogs and fed them, and was full of compassion for even the wolves and foxes, perceived as vermin by the hunters of her day.
So, as a long-time campaigner for animal protection I found it sad that the bank holiday this year fell right in the middle of a marathon hare-catching session at which the gentlest and most inoffensive creatures in the Irish countryside were forced to run from hyped-up dogs. It would be difficult to find an activity more at odds with the spirit of our beloved Saint/Goddess than this pathetic excuse for a sport.
The cry of the injured hare might go unheard in Clonmel, and in the corridors of political power, but I like to think that Brigid will heed its plea and touch the hearts of those wily TDs with her saintly Celtic wisdom and empathy for the animal kingdom.
On the wider issue of what’s happening to our wildlife, the Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss recently completed its deliberations, and it remains to be seen whether it can help to save what remains of our endangered and persecuted species.
After decades of trying just to end the scandal of hare coursing in Ireland I’m skeptical about the prospect of politicians finally taking the side of nature and the animals, over that of powerful lobbyists, big business, and the rapacious gambling industry.
Brigid, if you’re listening: we need a miracle!
