The Issue

The Burlington Rec Plex is currently allowing a known child sex offender to be on the premises. The Rec Plex is a city ran and funded facility open to the public.

Child sex offenders should not be present at the Burlington Rec Plex. This facility is a vital community hub where children regularly attend various activities such as sports practices, youth leagues, and family events. It's common for children to be there accompanying their parents to adult league sports as well, making the presence of known child offenders incredibly concerning and risky.

Sex offenders are often restricted in their movements and activities for a reason: research shows that proximity to potential victims increases the risk of reoffending. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, more than 800,000 registered sex offenders are in the United States, with a significant percentage being child sex offenders. Allowing them access to places like the Rec Plex undermines efforts to protect vulnerable communities, especially our children.

Banning child offenders from the Rec Plex isn’t just about following policy; it’s about prioritizing the safety and well-being of our children. Many community members are unaware of the inherent risks that come with unrestricted access to these offenders.
Our Rec Plex should be a safe environment where parents can confidently allow their children to participate in sporting and community events without the fear of encountering someone who poses a threat.
