Ban chicken use & slaughter for Kaporos

The Issue

Mayor Kahlil Seren: Ban chickens used and slaughtered for Kaporos.

Days before Yom Kippur, many Orthodox Jews participate in an ancient atonement ritual called Kapparot. For thousands of years, a live chicken would be grasped by their wings and swung over a person's head three times in a symbolic gesture and the sacrifice of the animal is supposed to help them do better in life. This is not a mandated ritual, but instead started as a tradition or custom using a young plant and has evolved to using a chicken.

Although it's said they treat the chickens humanely and donate them to people in need, is there anything humane about swinging a chicken by their wings and then slaughtering them when there is a more compassionate ritual? Today, there are more compassionate ways of performing the atonement ritual by using money. Those who already use money rather than a chicken add $18 (the cost of a chicken) and donate this money after the ritual. Donating money over a chicken helps those in need in more ways.

In previous years, animal rights activists have protested these acts within the Cleveland Heights city limits and have asked for the community to use money over chickens. Per the Cleveland Heights Ordinance chapter 505.12 killing animals are prohibited;

505.12  HUNTING OR KILLING ANIMALS PROHIBITED.
(a)   Except as otherwise specifically provided in this chapter, no person shall unlawfully hunt, kill or attempt to kill any animals within the City.   (b)   Whoever violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree.
(Ord.  105-2019.  Passed 12-2-19.)

Culture and tradition are not an excuse for animal abuse. No religion mandates slaughtering animals, it's a "may" not "must." Please sign the petition asking the Mayor of Cleveland Heights, Kahlil Seren, to ban the use of live chickens for ritual and slaughter.
