Growing up, I cherished the simple joys of British wildlife – the chirping of sparrows, the golden hues of robins in the winter, and the majestic presence of soaring raptors. However, my heart sinks each time I come across another social media post where young children are seen using catapults or slingshots to harm these innocent creatures. These instruments, though seemingly benign, have become tools for reckless harm and must be regulated.

Catapults and slingshots currently require no licence in the UK, making them easily accessible to individuals of all ages. This unfettered access has contributed to a worrying trend of wildlife disturbance and endangerment. Organisations such as the RSPB report that hundreds of birds are injured or killed each year due to the misuse of these devices. The time has come to take action to protect our wildlife and ensure the safety of our communities.

We propose that the UK government implement legislation to require licences for the ownership and use of catapults and slingshots. These licences would ensure that only responsible individuals, who have undergone training, can operate these tools, thereby curbing their misuse. In addition, we advocate for the limitation of these devices to controlled environments such as regulated shooting ranges. This approach would reduce instances where the public and wildlife are needlessly put at risk, whilst encouraging safe practices for those genuinely interested in the sport.
