Ban “card-only” rules and protect cash as legal tender

Ban “card-only” rules and protect cash as legal tender
The Issue
In recent years, we have seen a significant shift towards card-only transactions, with many businesses across the UK refusing to accept cash payments. This trend has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to concerns over hygiene and the encouragement of contactless payments. However, this move away from cash transactions is leaving certain groups of people vulnerable and can lead to a wider social inequality.
According to the Access to Cash Review, around 17% of the UK population (that’s over 8 million adults) would struggle to cope in a cashless society. The elderly, low-income households, rural communities, and people with disabilities often rely heavily on cash for their day-to-day transactions. For these groups, the physical and emotional barriers of adopting digital payment methods can be significant.
Moreover, cash provides a fail-safe option in the event of digital failures, such as technical glitches or cyber-attacks, which have been increasing in frequency. Consumers could find themselves unable to access their funds, buy essential goods, or even seek emergency services.
It is crucial to understand that cash is not only a means of transaction but also a symbol of personal control over one's finances. The choice to use cash or card should remain with the individual and not be dictated by businesses.
We urge the UK Government to protect the rights of consumers by banning “card-only” rules and ensuring that cash remains a viable and legal tender. By doing so, we can safeguard the financial inclusion of all citizens and uphold their right to choose.
Please sign this petition to call on the UK Government to take decisive action in maintaining cash as a universally accepted means of payment and to protect our freedom of choice.
